Established in 1920, shortly after the union of Romanian territories, in a European context marked by the redefinition of states and by the aftermath of World War I, the Polytechnic School in Timisoara – as was originally called – was the answer to one of the requirements of the Romanian society of the time, namely the formation of engineers. Fully consistent with its mission with the desire to assert itself internationally, Politehnica University of Timisoara is currently developing fruitful collaboration with many universities in Europe, USA, Canada, South America and Asia, resulting in over 190 cooperation agreements concluded directly or under European Union programs. With a 6-year study period, achieved by integrating the bachelor with the master degree, the architecture specialty offers to the students a holistic view of the complex parameters that define the architectural practice.

The Architecture and Urban Planning Faculty provides two main bachelor programs, one 6 year program in General Architecture and one 3 year program in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design, as well as three 2 year Masters programs in Heritage Restoration and Regeneration, Urban Planning and Landscape Design and a final one in Current Trends, Materials and Technology in Interior Design. The Faculty has approximately 700 students, 35 tenured professors and another 40 assistant professors. During the 12 semesters of the main bachelor program, students gain theoretical and practical knowledge in both architecture and urban design, as well as from the related and complementary fields of fine arts, human sciences, engineering and technology, all of which provide adequate knowledge matching the demands of the profession. The theoretical information gained during each year is linked with real practical activities during summer, when the faculty offers a wide array of choices: different field trips, architecture or urban planning workshops, short term internships in architectural offices or on selected building sites. All these activities aim to give our students a first, unmediated contact with the realities of the architectural field. During their final years, students may apply via the ERASMUS mobility program to study in of the 25 partner universities or to work as interns in offices abroad, thus gaining a much needed international experience. Completion of studies is done through a Diploma project, that can tackle either a general complex architectural design, a rehabilitation or restoration of an existing building / site or an urban design project. The diploma is presented in front of a committee, comprised of faculty members and invited professors and practitioners.
